About Me

Maria Wagner

I create paper sculptures where the circus doesn’t live on the arena, but in the whispers of the backstage — in those pauses that remain beyond the applause. These are images frozen in the sincerity of the moment, when masks are off and reality is soaked in silence and the faint echo of the past.

Philosophy:

My work under PaperCircus is an exploration of the gentle nostalgia that smolders within each of us. In a world that has become rational and comprehensible, my characters bring us back to the feelings of when the world was vast, and the magic of the circus was undeniable.
I give visible form to these images, reminding us that the realm of imagination has not disappeared — it has simply grown quiet.
There are no loud gestures in my pieces, only the silence of the moment and a sincerity that is recognized without words.
They simply exist — quiet, contemplative, and eternal.

About the material:

I work with paper — one of the oldest artistic mediums. The sculpture is born layer by layer, through careful exploration of volume and texture. In this process, a flat sheet acquires density and character.

The artistic painting is not merely decorative; it is a way to reveal the story already embedded within the form. The paper ceases to be just a material — it becomes an extension of emotion, coming to life in color and detail.
